Sunday, the beeline for the US. We left Sussex and headed for Southwest Harbor, Me. I had located a campground open until mid Oct called Smuggler's Den. A short distance from there is a sports lounge named Joey's Place that shows every NFL game. Since SF doesn't start until 4:25 out here we can get in and go see the game.
The thing we noticed driving is the significant color change since we went into Canada.
We arrived at the Smuggler's Den at 3pm and had things all set so we could venture off for the game. Disappointing outcome, but fun to see being this far from home.
Monday morning we begin to explore Acadia National Park. We start with a trip to the main visitor center. I was surprised by how small it was. There are 17 gates into the park, none manned. If however you drive through the park without a permit and get caught the fine is hefty. We got our seniors life time pass long ago so entry was free.
We started in Bar Harbor to decide if we wanted a boat tour or not.
We learned the tour boat shown was being used for the tour boat in port and the town was overwhelmed with passengers. We set off on our own and drove several of the roads around this massive park and these peninsulas.
This is a spectacular place and I can't even begin to describe the beauty. It is massive in scope and has rock shores, sandy beaches and a research center we will visit tomorrow. Every place you turn has a "lobster pound" food place serving all kinds of cooked lobster or you can buy them live. Our friends in Presque Isle recommended a place, Trenton Bridge lobster pound. Since the day was going exactly as planned we decided the lunch there. Turns out it is extremely popular and today was their last day of the season. A Hot Lobster Roll, and Lobster Sandwich, and they were WONDERFUL. Glad we stopped today or we would have missed them.
The one thing I noticed is that it was non stop from the moment we got there until we left. More driving around after lunch and the sights did not disappoint.
Sure hope your are enjoying this as much as we are!
